Losing teeth is no laughing matter. Periodontal (gum) disease isn’t fun either. But these sad conditions don’t just sneak up on you. They both start with allowing plaque build-up. So, when we’re talking about oral health, it is absolutely necessary to discuss plaque and how ignoring it can lead to the most damaging dental problems.

We recommend that all of our patients always follow a consistent daily routine of oral care to eliminate plaque.

#1: Brush 2x Every Day

The research shows that the best thing you can do to control plaque is to brush your teeth in the morning after breakfast, and right before you go to bed at night. Of course, there are other things (below) that help.

#2: Floss Once a Day

Flossing is the perfect companion to brushing to get at left-over particles of food and debris that your toothbrush cannot. Try a water flosser if you find you are inconsistent with traditional floss.

#3: Gargle with an ADA Approved Mouthwash

The American Dental Association’s seal of approval can be found on mouthwash products. Check the label for that seal and rinse your mouth with one of these.

#4: Professional Teeth Cleaning by a Dentist Every 6 Months

Last but not least, you should see your dentist twice a year for professional cleanings and so that he may give you a regular check-up for any other dental issues that should be given attention. Preventative care is key to catching potential issues before they develop into major problems.
