Have you ever heard of thrush? If not, you have now! Thrush in Farmington, New Mexico, is an infection of the oral cavity that is caused by candida fungus, which is also known as yeast. This issue develops when the balance between your oral bacteria and microorganisms becomes unbalanced, causing the fungus to grow out of control.
For more information about this issue, your dentist, Dr. Ryan Wilson, and our Canyon Dental Care team has provided the following information:
Causes of thrush are usually:
-The imbalance of bacteria and microorganisms in your mouth
-Medications, like corticosteroids, antibiotics, and birth control pills
-Illnesses or medical situations, like uncontrolled diabetes, HIV infection, cancer, dry mouth, and hormonal changes during pregnancy
The main symptom of thrush is the quick appearance of a creamy white lesion inside your mouth. It generally appears on the tongue, inner cheeks, gums, roof of your mouth, tonsils, or back of your throat. The lesion might be painful and it might bleed when you scrape it or brush your teeth.
Treatments for thrush generally include taking prescribed medication, like antifungal medication, to eliminate the infection. Sometimes your dentist will provide a dental treatment that will be specific for your age and the reason for the thrush.
